The heart of the new valley station “Planet Planai” in Schladming forms the so-called “Loop”. The basic idea of the design was to combine all functions for racing and everyday life under one roof, creating a smooth transition from the natural landscape to the building. The loop covers the existing and expanded office space, the cable car hall, a sports shop, service areas for users, space for a business premises and a studio for the ORF.
The loop is a 30-35cm thick, three-dimensionally curved, jointless reinforced concrete shell, which is supported by 74 inclined composite columns. The composite columns had to be partially guided through the existing building to there new foundations. These foundations consist of jet-grout columns located in the basement of the existing building.
The ground plan dimensions of the construction are approx. 80 x 120m with a max. height of about 14m. A major challenge in addition to the implementation of the complex geometry of the loop was the integration of the existing cable car station, as this forms a static unit with the underlying building.
